Dear Mr. President, Honorable Members of Congress and Distinguished Staff,
The word decency, is simply not as emotionally invigorating as the words heroic or dominating. It does not stir a sense of high vitality or urgency. It is a calm and basic descriptor of the concept of common trust displayed by fair and just human beings as we relate to one another. It is more of a root value ingrained in the fabric of our personal moral compass from the examples of parents, mentors and true friends. By emphasizing decency, we call attention to our need to focus on successful human interactions.
Those interactions dictate the need for basic health care for all.
Caring for others in a decent manner means caring for ourselves, our families, our nation, and our fragile planet. It is the heroic, awe-inspiring and decent thing to do.
Sincerely,
Stephen F Hightower MD FACP
