Strategies for patients to lower drug costs JAMA
Great cartoon editorial. Besides the obvious questions it poses, it hints at several others. Are there alternative medications that might work just as well? If a patient is taking a medication prescribed by his or her doctor, is it ethical to administratively place that medication out of the patient's reach? Is there a safety net in place for patients who can no longer afford their medications? Given the failed free-market in health care (a failure vividly portrayed in this cartoon), what incentive exists to keep pharmaceutical companies from raising their prices continuously? There are, of course, other questions, but the principle one is how can we protect patients like this from situations like this? Thanks for your excellent post! DSKMD
